I want to start by owning that this is not an area of identity or expertise for me. And also recognize that whiteness is a social construct that has changed over time to benefit those in a position of power. For instance, Italians and Irish were not initially classified as white, and at one point a case went to the Supreme Court to determine if Asians were white. Although the census may define them as white, it’s important to zoom out and see if they experience patterns of oppression- do they have the same access and what is their history of colonization or colonizing? I would argue that there needs to be nuance here as well.
What do you think?
